Comprehensive Review of the 2024 Mazda CX-70 PHEV Premium Plus: Performance and Features Unveiled

The 2024 Mazda CX-70 PHEV Premium Plus signifies Mazda’s debut in the plug-in hybrid (PHEV) category, offering a blend of luxury, efficiency, and performance. Positioned between the compact CX-50 and the larger CX-90, it targets drivers looking for a midsize SUV with premium features and an electrified powertrain, all without the necessity for a third row. The CX-70 features a robust hybrid system and high-quality materials, establishing itself as a formidable contender in the PHEV arena. Having taken it for a week-long test drive, I believe this is my favorite among Mazda’s offerings, showcasing the significant value packed into this midsize SUV.

    Exterior

The exterior design of the CX-70 closely mirrors that of the CX-90, opting for a two-row layout instead of a third row. Its sleek, aerodynamic form and eye-catching front grille contribute to a modern yet refined appearance. The Premium Plus trim includes stunning 21-inch alloy wheels, available in striking colors like Soul Red Crystal and Rhodium White, enhancing its sophisticated style. The overall look successfully marries elegance with a hint of sportiness, appealing to those desiring a blend of refinement and a touch of personality. I genuinely appreciate its aesthetic appeal.

    Interior

Stepping inside the CX-70 PHEV Premium Plus reveals a luxurious cabin, crafted from top-notch materials and equipped with the latest technology. Nappa leather upholstery, available in red or black, elevates the premium experience, while features like a panoramic sunroof, heated and ventilated front seats, and heated rear seats ensure comfort for all passengers. The centerpiece is a 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system, complemented by a digital instrument cluster that provides seamless access to wireless Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and navigation. The rear passengers benefit from ample space and thoughtful touches like manual sunshades and various USB ports, making the cabin both practical and welcoming.

    Powertrain and Performance

At the core of the CX-70 PHEV is a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine paired with an electric motor, producing a combined 323 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque. Thanks to the electric motor, it offers an all-electric driving range of up to 26 miles on a full charge, making it ideal for short trips. Once the battery is depleted, the gasoline engine engages seamlessly to maintain hybrid operation. With a combined fuel economy rating of 56 MPGe, the CX-70 successfully balances performance with efficiency. However, some drivers may experience slight hesitation in the 8-speed automatic transmission, particularly during shifts at lower speeds.

    Driving Experience

Behind the wheel of the CX-70 PHEV, it handles well given its size, though it feels heavier than smaller Mazda models. It includes multiple driving modes, such as Sport and Off-Road, allowing drivers to customize performance to suit various conditions. Although the suspension effectively absorbs most road imperfections, the ride can feel somewhat firm, especially over rough terrain. Handling remains sharp for a midsize SUV, but the vehicle’s weight can limit its agility on twisting roads. Further enhancing its practicality for weekend adventures, the CX-70 has a towing capacity of 3,500 pounds.

    Technology and Safety

The CX-70 Premium Plus boasts a comprehensive array of advanced technology and safety features, including adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, front and rear parking sensors, and a 360-degree camera system. The infotainment interface is intuitive, although the dial mounted on the console may not feel as intuitive as a touchscreen. A heads-up display delivers navigation and safety alerts directly in the driver’s line of sight, helping maintain focus on the road. With Mazda’s intelligent braking systems and sophisticated driver assistance technologies, the CX-70 is a suitable choice for families and tech-savvy drivers alike.

    Conclusion

The 2024 Mazda CX-70 PHEV Premium Plus offers an impressive blend of luxury, performance, and fuel efficiency. Its spacious two-row layout presents a practical option for families not requiring a third-row seat while still desiring premium features and environmentally friendly driving. Despite minor concerns regarding the transmission and ride comfort, the CX-70 stands out as a stylish and competent plug-in hybrid SUV that delivers considerable value for those interested in Mazda’s newest hybrid innovations.
