First Impressions of the 2023 Honda Civic Type R: Stylish Interiors & Strong Exteriors

The long-awaited reveal of the 2023 Honda Civic Type R has finally happened after months of anticipation. The new iteration of the Civic Type R was introduced by Honda at an event in Los Angeles, yet specific details were not disclosed.

At this point, all we can confirm is that the 2023 Civic Type R will be equipped with a revised version of the current model’s 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine, paired with a six-speed manual transmission featuring automatic rev-matching. Honda has indicated that the updated engine boasts increased power and responsiveness compared to its predecessor, which currently delivers 306 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque.

An evident performance enhancement is the introduction of new 265/30-series Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tires mounted on 19-inch wheels, departing from the outgoing model’s 245/30 tires paired with 20-inch wheels.

Similar to the powertrain, Honda has intentionally withheld comprehensive information regarding the chassis upgrades, merely stating the presence of “improved suspension and steering dynamics.” Notably, the 2023 Civic Type R has already exceeded its predecessor, securing a new front-wheel drive track record at the Suzuka Circuit. Furthermore, the incorporation of Brembo brakes contributes to maintaining optimal control.

Critiques of the previous-generation Civic Type R focused on its excessively aggressive design language catering to a younger demographic. Fortunately, Honda has subtly refined the styling to exude a more sophisticated appearance, although a prominent rear spoiler still remains and the central three exhaust tips are retained. The driver and front passenger will enjoy sportier seating draped in a luxurious suede-like material.

Internally, the upgrades mirror those found in the existing Civic hatchback, featuring a 10.2-inch digital instrument cluster and a 9-inch infotainment display supporting wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity.

In summary, Honda has left the essence of the Civic Type R largely intact, with the most notable alteration being a more universally appealing exterior aesthetic.

Official pricing details for the 2023 Civic Type R have yet to be disclosed, with the anticipated release scheduled for this autumn.
