Review of 2024 Volvo XC90 Recharge: An Enduring Hybrid Vehicle

Amid its age as a three-row luxury SUV, the Volvo XC90 persists as a leading competitor in its segment, challenging adversaries like the BMW X5, Audi Q7, and Jeep Grand Cherokee L. The 2024 Volvo XC90 Recharge distinguishes itself with its timeless design, remarkable electric driving range, and roomy and cozy interior suitable for families.

Since its introduction in 2026, Volvo has implemented minor enhancements to its flagship SUV while preserving its design. The XC90 is offered in three trim variations: Core, Plus, and Ultimate, all featuring all-wheel drive. The high-end T8 Recharge plug-in hybrid delivers an electric-only range of up to 32 miles, presenting an enticing alternative for individuals not prepared for a fully electric automobile.

The 2024 Volvo XC90 showcases Nordic design with an elegant exterior highlighting a sophisticated front fascia and distinct tall taillights that have aged gracefully. Despite its vintage, the XC90’s design retains a contemporary and appealing look. While maintaining a boxy silhouette, the XC90 also projects a robust and nimble presence for its dimensions. Electing for 21-inch wheels complements the XC90’s expansive wheel arches, although smaller wheels with taller sidewalls offer a more comfortable ride.

In relation to its performance, the 2024 XC90 provides adequate power. The XC90 Recharge plug-in hybrid, featuring 455 horsepower and 523 pound-feet of torque, represents the most potent variant available. Despite its bulk, the XC90 Recharge can accelerate from 0-60 mph in 5.0 seconds, a swift achievement for a three-row SUV.

Equipped with an 18.8-kWh battery pack, the XC90 can journey up to 32 miles on electric power, attaining a combined fuel efficiency rating of 27 mpg. On the highway, the XC90 emphasizes smooth cruising over high-performance driving, particularly with the optional air suspension that absorbs uneven road surfaces.

Security is a top priority for Volvo, and the 2024 XC90 performs admirably in this realm, excelling in safety assessments and featuring standard driver-assistance technologies such as automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, active lane control, blind-spot monitors, adaptive LED headlights, and parking sensors. The XC90 also integrates Volvo’s Pilot Assist system, furnishing limited hands-free driving capability.

Internally, the XC90 adheres to high standards with its commodious and finely crafted cabin. It boasts one of the finest interiors in the luxury SUV category, accommodating a maximum of seven passengers with its Nordic design. The seating is upholstered in an innovative, eco-friendly wool blend fabric. The front and second rows provide generous space for adults, while the third row is more suitable for children or shorter passengers. Folding the second and third rows expands the cargo area to 85.7 cubic feet. With all seats upright, there is 15.8 cubic feet of cargo capacity.

Despite the appealing interior of the XC90 Recharge, its infotainment system feels antiquated. The 9-inch vertical touchscreen, while intuitive, lacks the contemporary look of its rivals. The system’s responsiveness may be sluggish, and the screen size seems inadequate. Additionally, it lacks wireless integration for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, hinting at its outdated nature.

The initial price for the 2024 Volvo XC90 Recharge is $73,195 for the standard Core trim, with the high-end Ultimate trim commencing at $80,895.

The 2024 Volvo XC90 Recharge continues to be a noteworthy choice for consumers owing to its enduring design, lavish interior, and remarkable electric driving range. It achieves a harmonious equilibrium between performance and elegance, setting it apart in the luxury three-row SUV category.
