The world’s title for the fastest electric car has been taken by the Rimac Nevera. This all-electric hypercar reached an astounding speed of 256 mph (412 km/h) during a speed record attempt at the Automotive Testing Papenburg.
Fueled by four electric motors delivering a total of 1914 horsepower and 1696 lb-ft of torque, the Nevera can go from 0-60 mph in less than 2.4 seconds. Previously, the company had announced a top speed of 258 mph, which has now been confirmed.
Rimac is also the owner of Bugatti, renowned for its hypercars capable of 300 mph. Designing a quad-turbo W16 engine capable of achieving such high speeds is a challenge on its own, but replicating the same in an electric vehicle is an impressive accomplishment. Consider the strain on the electric motors and the cooling systems essential to handle the heat generated.
Setting this top speed record, the Nevera has shown that electric cars can compete with Bugattis and Koenigseggs in terms of pure performance.
