The 2023 Toyota 4Runner 40th Anniversary Special Edition Unveiled

It’s remarkable to fathom, but the Toyota 4Runner is commemorating an impressive 40 years on the road this year. In honor of this significant milestone, Toyota has revealed the 4Runner 40th Anniversary special edition, integrating vintage design elements that draw inspiration from the original 1980s 4Runner model.

The 40th Anniversary 4Runner represents a deviation from the standard 4Runner, which has not undergone a complete revamp in over a decade. This sets the 4Runner apart from its rivals, as Toyota has only made minor alterations to this model over the past 14 years.

In contrast to most SUVs, the 4Runner is constructed on a truck-based framework, furnishing the essential ground clearance for off-road expeditions. While the 4Runner thrives on trails, it can feel somewhat rough on paved roads.

The 40th Anniversary 4Runner special edition is grounded on the SR5 Premium trim level, showcasing bronze 17-inch wheels, a TOYOTA heritage grille, distinctive insignias, and retro yellow, orange, and red decals. It is obtainable in black, red, or white, with Toyota intending to manufacture only 4,040 units.

Although the 40th Anniversary 4Runner flaunts a vintage design, it also encapsulates the sentimental driving experience linked with the 4Runner. Entrenched in the same genetic makeup as the 2004-2015 Tacoma, the present generation 4Runner genuinely reflects its age.

Empowering the 4Runner is a 4.0-liter V6 engine churning out 270 horsepower and 278 pound-feet of torque, matched with an outdated 5-speed automatic transmission. The traditional V6 feels unrefined, necessitating some patience to set the 4Runner in motion.

The pliable suspension contributes to excessive frontal dipping, the brakes could be enhanced, and the steering lacks responsiveness while feeling excessively lightweight.

Internally, the 4Runner’s cabin emanates a vintage ambiance with its ample rotary knobs, 8-inch touchscreen, and antiquated gauge cluster.

Despite these deficiencies, the 4Runner remains a highly sought-after model for Toyota, boasting a devoted fan base and esteemed dependability. The imminent launch of a new 4Runner, based on the same framework as the 2024 Tacoma, brings about exciting prospects for the future.
